TORRINGTON >> Torrington’s Dylan Myrie ran for five touchdowns and 229 yards in a 40-15 win over Woodland at the Robert H. Frost Sports Complex Friday night.
“We had to do it for our first home win of the season,” said the junior speedster.
The Red Raiders are now 4-4, with road wins in their last two.
“We’re continuing in our development,” said Torrington Coach Gaitan Rodriguez. “Myrie was terrific, but it was a great team effort.”
John Pasko started the Red Raiders in the right direction with an opening kickoff return back to the Woodland 48 yard line.
Quarterback Brandon Reiff ate up half the distance to the Hawks’ goal with a 29-yard pass to Justin Egliskis, then scored on the five-play drive from the three.
From there, it was gutsy, fruitless runs by the Hawks (0-8) and a gold-medal track meet for Myrie.
“They ran a lot of deception plays,” said Rodriguez. “We bent but we didn’t break.”
Myrie’s first long engine-burn came on Torrington’s second play in the second quarter – a 65-yard streak of light down the left side of the field.
Woodland went four-and-out.
Myrie zipped another 45 yards downfield.
A good Woodland punt started Torrington on its own 23; Dom Phengkaen moved the ball three yards. Myrie went the other 74.
In all, Myrie had four second-quarter carries for three touchdowns and 185 yards.
Consider the game and Myrie out of sight.
Woodland’s Isaac Negron (16 carries, 99 yards) broke the shutout in the third period.
Myrie scored again on a five-yard burst, then had a 75-yard punt return called back for a Torrington personal foul as the quarter ended.
Instead, he blazed 35 yards for his final touchdown early in the fourth.
Woodland sophomore Richie Weishner scored the Hawks’ final touchdown and a two-point conversion with 1:37 left.
By then, everybody knew, the night belonged to Myrie.
