NEW HAVEN — Many winning traditions weigh down high school sports programs.
The Weston girls swimming team isn’t one of them.
“It is an amazing run of success. And the girls work super hard,” Weston senior quad-captain Mary Alice Kohn said. “But we always have a great time doing it. The experiences we have each year are unlike any other. We have passion. We have desire. But we are one happy swim family.”
Well, the Trojans added their seventh straight and ninth Class S girls swim championship title in 10 years to their vast collection Tuesday night at the 2019 Class S meet at the Southern Connecticut State University Hutchinson Natatorium.
Weston amassed 893.50 points over the 12 events to outdistance S runnerup Lauralton Hall (601).
Seymour (533) was third followed by Jonathan Law (392), East Catholic (356), Woodland (260) and Joel Barlow (231).
While Weston’s depth was the key — the Trojans finished 1, 2, 3, 7 in the 200-yard individual medley — it also had a number of gold medal performances.
Weston won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:49.74 behind Katherine Franco, Isabella Gary, Nicole Linell and Katherine Linell.
Other Class S individual champions for the Trojans included Gary (200 IM, 2:07.28; 100-yard breaststroke, 1:04.52) and Alexandra Bradley (100 Butterfly, 58.85).
“The girls swam exceptionally well. When there are personal best times all over, that’s all you can ask for,” said Weston coach Brandon Barone, who jumped into the pool to celebrate his third S championship in his tenure. “It was incredible swimming from everybody.
“The program always has great senior leadership. And that passes down from class to class,” Barone continued. “People graduate. People get hurt. And new girls step in. This is an incredible group of girls to be able to coach.”
Lauralton Hall has seen this movie play out before. So veteran coach Fran Pfeiffer and assistant Paul Katz had a number of silver linings to celebrate.
“We were superb,” Pfeiffer said. “Our time in the 400 yard free relay (2nd place, 3:37.66) broke a school record that had been standing for 20 years. It was a super team effort.”
Individual champions for Lauralton Hall included sophomore Claire Kehley (dead heat for 1st in 200 free; won 500 free in 5:10.66) and junior Vivian Freitas (100 backstroke, 58.30).
Seymour’s third place total of 533 was a school record as well.
“The girls swam out of their minds,” Seymour assistant coach Nick Blade said.
Leading the way were freshman Sophia Velleco (dead heat in 200 free) and freshman Katrine Oleary (won 50 free in 24.18; won 100 free in 52.95).
