TOP SWIMMING PERFORMANCES
Anne Bowens, Staples: A senior, Bowens recorded winning times in the 50-meter freestyle (28.11) and 100 breaststroke (1:21.82) for the Wreckers in their victory over Danbury.
Ava Breton, Cheshire: The junior earned a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle for the Rams in their recent matchup vs. Mercy and was part of the team’s winning 200 medley relay squad (1:57.24).
Ashley Calderon, Norwalk/McMahon: Calderon, a senior, won the 50 freestyle (25.80 seconds) and 100 butterfly (58.43) against Greenwich.
Lauren Daignault, Norwalk/McMahon: The senior finished first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.92 and was second in the 500 freestyle (5:28.05) against Greenwich.
Samantha Ennis, Greenwich: Ennis won the 100-yard backstroke vs. Norwalk/McMahon in 1:01.76 and placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:15.12). She also was part of the Cardinals’ 200 medley relay team (1:53.15) and the 400 freestyle relay squad (3:52.03) which finished first.
Regina Frias, Greenwich: A senior diver, Frias won the 1-meter event, earning 255.50 points in the Cardinals’ 100-86 win over Norwalk/McMahon.
Esme Hunter, Staples: In Staples’ season-opening win over Danbury, Hunter topped the competition in the 200 individual medley (2:31.72) and was first in the 100 backstroke (1:10.16). She helped spark the Wreckers’ winning 200 medley relay squad (2:06.63).
Riley Kudlac, Glastonbury: Kudlac, a freshman, registered winning performances in the 50 freestyle (24.98) and 100 freestyle (54.41) in her team’s competition against Cheshire.
Avery Kudlac, Glastonbury: The freshman notched a winning time in the 100 butterfly (1:00.09) and was second in the 50 freestyle, clocking in at 25.34 seconds vs. Cheshire.
Meghan Lynch, Greenwich: Lynch, a junior, was the 200-meter freestyle (2:06.51) and 400 freestyle (4:30.54) winner in Greenwich’s road victory against FCIAC rival Ridgefield. She also swam on the Cards’ winning 200 medley relay team (2:04.11).
Kendall Luecke, Darien: The junior won the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.66), then placed first in the 500 freestyle (5:19.19) in the Blue Wave’s season-opening victory vs. Wilton.
Katrine O’Leary, Seymour: O’Leary posted winning efforts in the 200 freestyle (2:02.27) and 100 freestyle (55.10) in Seymour’s meet vs. Sacred Heart.
Maggie Mantz, Hall: In Hall’s victory over E.O. Smith/Tolland, Mantz won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.69 and competed on her team’s first-place 200 medley relay squad (2:01.64).
Sophie Murphy, Cheshire: A junior, Murphy touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle in Cheshire’s victory over Glastonbury and posted a winning time of 53.05 in the 100 freestyle
Elisia Pagliuca, Mercy: Pagliuca finished first in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.44 against Cheshire and was part of the 400 freestyle relay squad that placed first in 4:04.50.
Hannah Seward, Ridgefield: Seward won both the 100-meter butterfly (1:06.67) and 50 freestyle (27.11) in the Tigers’ competition against Greenwich.
Jessica Qi, Staples: Qi began her sophomore season with first-place finishes in the 200-meter freestyle (2:13.53) and 400 freestyle (4:49.20) in Staples victory over Danbury.
Julia Stevens, Cheshire: The senior was the 200 freestyle (1:58.99) winner in the Rams’ 92-75 victory against Mercy and took top honors in the 500 freestyle (5:09.18) vs. Glastonbury, which Cheshire also defeated.
Olivia Velleco, Seymour: Velleco won two individual events vs. Sacred Heart, touching the wall first in the 200 IM (2:21.66) and 100 butterfly (1:04.63). The junior was part of Seymour’s first-place 200 medley relay squad (1:57.83).
Sophia Velleco, Seymour: A freshman Velleco had a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle (25.93) and also swam on the 200 medley relay squad, which placed first in an 83-74 win against Sacred Heart.
MEETS TO WATCH
Trumbull at Greenwich, Wednesday, 4:30 p.m.: Trumbull is coming off one of its best seasons in program history, having placed fourth at the 2018 Class LL Championships and eighth at the State Open. Greenwich, the defending FCIAC, Class LL and State open champions, began its season with victories against Danbury and Ridgefield.
Ridgefield at Norwalk/McMahon, at Barlow Mountain School in Ridgefield, Wednesday, 4 p.m.: Both teams placed among the top-10 in the team standings at the 2018 Class LL Championships, with the Ridgefield placing second and Norwalk/McMahon finishing eighth. The Tigers and Norwalk/McMahon each possess top tier swimmers and should test each other.
Seymour at Woodland, Friday, 4 p.m.: Seymour went undefeated during the regular season in 2018, before swimming away with the NVL title. Woodland is always one of its biggest rivals. Seymour won last season’s meeting, 91-74.
Hall at Wethersfield, Oct. 1, 4 p.m.: Wethersfield and Hall finished a strong fifth and sixth, respectively at last fall’s Class L Championships. At the 2018 State Open, Wethersfield was ninth, while Hall placed 12th in the team standings.
North Haven at Lauralton Hall, Oct. 1, 7 p.m.: A good early-season SCC meet, with both teams finishing among the top-15 at last year’s FCIAC Championships. Both squads have depth in most events.
Daniel Hand vs. Shelton, Oct. 1, 3:30 p.m., at Shelton Community Center Pool: Hand and Shelton were each top 20 teams at the 2018 State Open. Last fall, Hand posted an 87-75 win over Shelton.
