BEACON FALLS — Less than 5 minutes into Friday’s clash of Naugatuck Valley League unbeatens, Ansonia found itself in a situation that made Twitter scoreboard watchers squint their eyes and scratch their heads.

The Chargers stared down a 14-0 deficit against Woodland — but, hey, surprise! They didn’t even blink.

Ansonia rallied by ripping off 36 unanswered points over the next 31/2 quarters as the Chargers topped the Hawks, 36-20, before an estimated crowd of 1,500 in Beacon Falls.

“It was a lot of pressure, but I believe in my team,” said Ansonia running back Shykeem Harmon, who finished with 181 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. “I always know we can come through with the win. We kept on playing our game. That’s just great Ansonia football right there.”

WEEK 9 HS Football Schedule / Scoreboard

Harmon gave Ansonia (8-0) the lead for good when he returned a punt 60 yards for a score with 2:34 left in the first quarter. Jalen Johnson’s point-after kick made it 15-14 Ansonia, a score that stood at the end of an entertaining first half.

The Chargers dominated after halftime, forcing three quick punts and picking off Tyler Bulinski before Woodland (7-1) tacked on a late score. Harmon did most of his damage after the break, carrying 16 times for 121 yards. His 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter came after Jy’mere Jones blocked a punt to set up the Chargers at the Woodland 28.

“We come back to return the punt and give us some momentum, and the blocked punt gives us great field position,” Ansonia coach Tom Brockett said of the two key special-teams plays.

“Those plays are huge. Any one play in a game like tonight swings the game.”

Woodland shocked Ansonia by cruising down the field on the opening drive, which ended with Bulinski’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Justin Marks.

The Hawks recovered the ensuing onside kick — the strategy they employed all night — and Bulinski’s 50-yard pass to Jason Palmieri set up Edit Krivca’s 1-yard scoring plunge for a 14-0 lead with 7:36 to play in the first.

Woodland didn’t move the ball much over the next three quarters until a late, 60-yard touchdown hookup between Bulinski and Marks. Bulinski finished 12-of-20 passing for 215 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

“Our kids went to battle and they played hard,” Woodland coach Chris Moffo said.

“Unfortunately, we came up on the short end of the stick. I thought our kids played extremely well, but we made some errors and (Ansonia) capitalized on them. They’re a very good football team, so you can’t make those mistakes and expect them not to capitalize.”

Both teams should be headed to the Class S playoffs. Woodland finishes with Oxford and Seymour. Ansonia, which won its 83rd straight game against NVL opposition, faces Seymour and Naugatuck.

“We love games like this,” Brockett said.

“The Valley games are awesome. We haven’t played Woodland in a lot of years, and we should. You see what happens when Valley teams play. Seymour and Naugy played (Thursday night) and it was fun. These kids on both sides have a lot of pride in what they do.”
