Indoor Track: Little sparks Derby boys to NVL Championship; Woodland wins girls title

NEW HAVEN — Kenneth Little Jr. won two individual events and ran on one first-place relay to lead Derby to the team title at the NVL indoor track championships Monday afternoon at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Little Jr. won the 1000 (2:38.13) and 3200 (10:32.21) and anchored the Red Raiders’ winning 1600 sprint medley, as Derby finished with 96 points. Jakwan Hale won the high jump (6-0) and ran on the Red Raiders’ first-place 4×400 relay and Tristan Pruzinsky won the shot put (50-7.5).

The Oxford boys were seventh and the Seymour boys finished 10th, led by Bobby Melms’ meet record distance of 22-5.5 to win the long jump.

Woodland won the girls team crown with 108 points. Seymour and Derby placed third and fourth, respectively, and Oxford was seventh.

Regional first place finishers were Derby’s Ashia Cooper in the 300 (43.76) and high jump (5-0) and Rachel Fleischer in the long jump (17-0, meet record), Seymour’s Patricia Jurkowski in the 55 dash (7.48) and the Wildcats’ 4×200 relay of McKenzie Collins, Rebecca Johnson, Ashley Sobin and Suzana Imetovski and Oxford’s 1600 sprint medley team of Kayle Golding, Leanne Sepanek, Audrey Robinson and Jess Kondic.
