hopkins-ctTim Phipps is the new head football coach at The Hopkins School in New Haven. He is leaving the same position at Woodland Regional in Beacon Falls.

Hopkins announced the appointment on Thursday in a release. The move becomes effective July 1.

Phipps, who will also teach history at the school, replaces Tom Parr, who announced his retirement back in December after 33 seasons. Parr is also retiring as athletic director after 28 years next month.

“I am thrilled that Tim is joining the Hopkins family and taking over the football program,” Parr said in the release. “He is a proven winner on the field and strongly believes in the concept of the student-athlete. Tim is the right man for this job and I know the current and former players will be proud that he is our coach.”

Phipps said he met Parr for the first time in April. Parr showed him around the Hopkins’ campus.

“It’s humbling and at the same time I feel like I got a lot of work to do in order to prove that I’m worthy to have a position that he held for 33 years,” Phipps said. “I only got to meet him for first time a few weeks ago. But it’s amazing how highly people speak with him. The first thing they say about him, that they 100 percent agree upon, is that this is a guy has done phenomenal things on football field. For people to say that says a lot about this character and the job that he’s done.”

Phipps, 40, coached one season at Woodland out of the Naugatuck Valley League. The Hawks went 4-7, including a season-ending win over Seymour.

He previously served as Woodland’s offensive coordinator from 2008-13 under former coach Tim Shea, who left for Post University after taking the Hawks to the Class S state final in 2013.

“I look at this as another step in my profession. It’s in a different league and a different school and in a different conference,” Phipps said.

Parr guided Hopkins to a 206-74 record, four undefeated seasons, seven Fairchester League championships and four New England Championships.
